A ceremony is being held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi to observe Yaum-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan.
Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir is the chief guest on the occasion. His predecessor, retired Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, and cricketer Babar Azam are also in attendance.
‘Tragic’ events of May 9 a wake-up call for us, says PM Shehbaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the individuals who targeted martyrs’ monuments and symbols of state on May 9 had “attacked the idea and identity of Pakistan, and gave the enemies of the country reasons to celebrate”.
In a tweet, he said that the nation is observing Youm-i-Takreem Shuhada-i-Pakistan today to pay tribute to the country’s martyrs.
“I don’t see the tragic incidents of May 9 as merely a protest that became violent. The designs of those who planned them were actually very sinister. There was a clear build-up to the shameful incidents, as the whole nation witnessed in utter disbelief and a state of shock how the lust of some people for power made them do what was never done before,” the premier said.
He said that the “tragic and heart-rending events” of May 9 were a wake-up call. “We have to identify and expose all such people who want to destroy the foundations of Pakistan. May 9 has drawn up a dividing line between the protectors and builders of Pakistan and those who wish to weaken it,” he said.

PTI’s Hammad Azhar says homes of his sisters ‘raided’ after threats

The former minister tweeted in the early hours of the day, saying that a raid had taken place at homes of his sisters. He mentioned that his sisters were fortunately not present at home during the incident.
‘They will not let you go until you hold a press conference’
Asad Umar’s press conference comes hours after Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, during a hearing on Umar’s bail plea, had remarked: “They will not let you go until you hold a press conference”.
The comments appeared to be a reference to the manner in which multiple PTI leaders have announced their decision to quit the party while also condemning the violence in the country on May 9.
Asad Umar says want to speak openly, but not apt to do so when in leadership position
“After May 9, it is not personally possible for me to fulfil the responsibilities of leadership in these circumstances. So I will be resigning as the secretary general of the PTI and members of its core committee.
“Another reason is that I want to talk openly about what needs to be done … but when you are in a leadership position, it is not [apt] that you give your individual opinion.
“So I am resigning from these party positions.”
Asad Umar stresses political dialogue
“The chef justice has said multiple times that political issues should be resolved through a dialogue, that political parties should sit together and find a way out [of this crisis] through compromise and reconciliation — which is the duty of politicians. And it is the responsibility of all political parties, including the PTI, to fulfil this responsibility.
“The army also said in the corps commander conference that political issues should be resolved through a dialogue … and friendly countries are also calling for a political dialogue.
“So, in my opinion, when all pillars of the state, your friends and Pakistan’s private sector, all are supporting this (dialogue), then we should find a solution through a political dialogue without wasting any time.”
Pakistan facing most ‘dangerous’ circumstances since 1971: Asad Umar
“If nothing good is transpiring for any of the stakeholders, it means that what is happening in the country today is not right. It means that something different needs to be done.
“I believe that since 1971, after the formation of Bangladesh, Pakistan has not faced circumstances as dangerous as it is facing presently”.
Common Pakistani is in pain today: Asad Umar
“Twenty-five million people of Pakistan are the fifth stakeholder, which is more important than all other stakeholders.
“In the past 13 months, they have been facing unprecedented inflation … a common Pakistanis life is difficult today and they are in pain.”
‘PDM a political reality whose politics has been wrecked in past 13 months,’ says Asad Umar
“The fourth big stakeholder is the PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement).
“They are our political rivals but also a political reality.
“In my opinion, if elections are held today, the PTI will form the government in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Centre. And the PDM will form the government in Sindh and Balochistan. Moreover, they will emerge as a strong opposition in the Centre.
“But the politics of this political reality has been wrecked in the past 13 months. They have weakened, and when political parties weaken, not just democracy but the country also weakens.”
Asad Umar says PTI biggest political party, only national party in Pakistan
“The third big stakeholder is the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. In my opinion it is Pakistan biggest political party and the only national party.
“But thousands of [its] workers and most of its leadership are presently in jail.
“This is the situation that the country’s biggest political party finds itself in.”
‘Army doesn’t comprise only few big generals, but also thousands who put life at stake for country’
“The army does not comprise only two to three big generals, who are talked about on television and in press conferences.
“The army comprises hundreds of thousands of individuals who put their lives at stake for guarding the country and my and your protection.”
HRCP opposes any move to proscribe legitimate political parties
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has opposed any possible move by the state to “proscribe legitimate political parties”.
The commission expressed deep concern that “nonpolitical powers may take advantage of the unfolding situation — including the sudden resignations of PTI leaders — to further their own agenda.”
May 9 not just condemnable but also a moment of reflection: Asad Umar
“Scenes witnessed on May 9 are not just condemnable but also and moment of reflection. [It needs to be thought about] that why such a situation arose.
“And the message sent outside the country was also concerning.”
‘Army’s strength signified by not just weapons but also nation’s support for it’
Prior to announcing his resignation from party positions, PTI leader Asad Umar highlighted the importance of the army for the country and said armed forces’ strength was signified by not just its weapons but the nation’s support for it.
Nation will decide if Imran’s decisions were wrong: Asad Umar
“We know the decisions he (Imran Khan) took … he became prime minister and Pakistan’s most popular leader because of them.
“If he now took wrong decisions, who will determine if he took wrong or right decisions? not me [but] the nation.
“If the nation thinks he took wrong decisions then you will see it.”
